After high school, Marquis was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the first round of the 1996 amateur draft. He spent five years in the Braves' minor league system before making his major league debut in 2000. Over the course of his 15-year major league career, Marquis played for ten different teams, including the Cardinals, the Nationals, the Mets, and the Padres. His best season came in 2004, when he won 15 games and earned an All-Star selection as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Throughout his career, Marquis was known for his versatility as a pitcher. He was able to pitch effectively as both a starter and a reliever, and his ability to throw multiple pitches and change speeds made him a valuable asset to any team. Marquis retired from baseball in 2015 with a career record of 124-116, a 4.61 ERA, and 1,204 strikeouts. While he didn't quite make it to the Hall of Fame, he will long be remembered as a versatile and reliable pitcher who made a significant contribution to the game of baseball.
