Jeff Mathis is a retired American professional baseball catcher who played for 15 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB). He was born on March 31, 1983, in Marianna, Florida, and attended Marianna High School. Mathis was an exceptional athlete and played both football and baseball in high school. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in the first round of the 2001 MLB draft, and quickly made his way through the minor leagues before making his debut in the majors in 2005. Mathis's baseball career spanned 15 seasons, during which he played for several teams, including the Los Angeles Angels, Toronto Blue Jays, Miami Marlins, Arizona Diamondbacks, Texas Rangers, and Philadelphia Phillies. He was known for his exceptional defensive skills and was one of the top defensive catchers in the league throughout his career. Mathis was an excellent game caller and was relied upon heavily by his pitchers to guide them through games. He was also a skilled blocker and threw out a high percentage of runners attempting to steal bases.

In addition to his defensive skills, Mathis was also a respectable hitter, finishing his career with a .198 batting average, 32 home runs, and 194 RBIs. He hit several clutch home runs throughout his career, including a walk-off home run in the 11th inning of a game against the New York Yankees in 2017. Mathis was known for his leadership skills both on and off the field and was respected by his teammates and coaches alike.
