Jerry Coleman

Jerry Coleman was a Major League Baseball player and broadcaster who dedicated his life to the sport. Born on September 14, 1924, in San Jose, California, Coleman started his baseball career at a young age. In 1942, he was signed up by the New York Yankees after being noticed by scout Bill Essick while playing for the Mission Reds in the Pacific Coast League. After retiring from his playing career in 1958, Jerry Coleman became a Yankee broadcaster. He eventually became the lead play-by-play announcer for the team, where he spent more than 40 years working in the booth. Coleman was known for his colorful style, charisma, and his ability to fuse humor into his commentary. During his time as a broadcaster, he received numerous awards and accolades, including six Emmy Awards and the Ford C. Frick Award, which is presented annually to top broadcasters in baseball.

In 2014, Jerry Coleman passed away at the age of 89. His legacy, however, still lives on. He was inducted into the San Diego Padres Hall of Fame in 2001 and into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 2007.
