Jerry Grote was born in San Antonio, Texas, in 1942. He grew up playing baseball, and by the time he was a teenager, he was already being scouted by the Houston Colt .45s (now the Houston Astros). Grote quickly became known for his defensive abilities behind the plate. He was a skilled catcher who excelled at calling games and working with his pitchers. He also had a strong arm and was known for his ability to throw out base stealers. Grote spent most of his career playing for the New York Mets, where he was an instrumental part of the team's success in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He was a two-time All-Star and won a Gold Glove award in 1970.

Despite being primarily known for his defense, Grote was also a solid hitter. He batted .252 over his 16-year career and hit 39 home runs. Grote retired from baseball in 1981 and went on to work as a coach and manager in the minor leagues. He was known for his tough, no-nonsense approach to coaching and was respected by players and colleagues alike. Grote's contributions to the game of baseball have been honored in various ways, and he will always be remembered as one of the best defensive catchers to ever play the game.
