Jim Kaat was born on November 7, 1938, in Zeeland, Michigan. He attended Hope College and later signed with the Washington Senators in 1957. Kaat made his major league debut in 1959 and went on to pitch for 25 seasons before retiring in 1983. During his long and illustrious career, Kaat played for several teams, including the Senators, Minnesota Twins, Chicago White Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Yankees, and St. Louis Cardinals. Kaat was a two-time All-Star and a 16-time Gold Glove Award winner during his career. He is regarded as one of the best fielding pitchers in baseball history. However, it was his pitching that made him a star. He won 283 games and had an ERA of 3.45, while striking out 2,461 batters. He was also among the top ten pitchers in the league in wins five times, innings pitched six times, and complete games six times. Kaat was elected to the Minnesota Twins Hall of Fame in 2001 and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2021 by the Today's Game Era Committee.

Kaat was known for being a fierce competitor on the field, but also for being a great teammate and leader in the locker room. He was deeply respected by his fellow players and fans alike. After retiring from playing, Kaat became a broadcaster for several teams, including the New York Yankees and MLB Network. He is also a well-respected baseball analyst and writer, having authored several books about the game.
