Jim Leyland

Jim Leyland is a legendary figure in the world of baseball. Born in Perrysburg, Ohio, in 1944, Leyland was a talented athlete from a young age. He attended college at the University of Toledo, where he played both football and baseball before ultimately choosing to focus on the latter. Leyland was signed by the Detroit Tigers as a catcher in 1963, and he spent five years in their minor league system before being called up to the major leagues in 1968. However, Leyland's playing career never really took off, and he retired from playing after a season in the minors in 1971. More about Jim Leyland

Despite his relatively short playing career, Leyland's impact on baseball would be felt for decades to come. After spending several years as a minor league manager, Leyland was given his first major league managing job with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986. He immediately made an impact, leading the Pirates to three straight division titles from 1990 to 1992, as well as a National League pennant in 1991. Leyland's success in Pittsburgh earned him a reputation as one of the top managers in baseball, and in 1997 he was hired to lead the Florida Marlins. In just his second season with the team, Leyland guided the Marlins to their first-ever World Series championship, cementing his status as one of the all-time greats.

After a few years away from managing, Leyland returned to the game in 2006 as the skipper of the Detroit Tigers. Once again, he made an immediate impact, leading the Tigers to the World Series in 2006, their first appearance in the Fall Classic since 1984. Despite losing to the St. Louis Cardinals in five games, Leyland solidified his status as a future Hall of Famer. He continued to manage the Tigers until 2013, when he announced his retirement from the game. Over his 22-year career as a manager, Leyland won three Manager of the Year awards, two pennants, and one World Series championship, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest managers in the history of baseball.
