Jim Leyritz was born on December 27, 1963, in Lakewood, Ohio. He attended Eastern Kentucky University and was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 16th round of the 1985 Major League Baseball Draft. Leyritz made his Major League debut in 1990 with the Yankees and became a versatile player who could play catcher, first base, and outfield. Leyritz is perhaps best remembered for his performance in the 1996 World Series against the Atlanta Braves. In game four, he hit a dramatic three-run home run off Braves pitcher Mark Wohlers to tie the game in the eighth inning. The Yankees went on to win the game and eventually the series, with Leyritz earning World Series MVP honors.
