Perry was born in Williamston, North Carolina, in 1935, and began playing baseball at an early age. He attended high school in the town of Aurora, where he excelled as a pitcher and was named an All-State player in 1953. He went on to play college baseball at Campbell University, where he continued to hone his skills as a pitcher. After college, Perry was signed by the Cleveland Indians and went on to make his Major League debut in 1959.

During his career, Perry amassed an impressive record of 215-174, with a lifetime ERA of 3.45. He won the Cy Young award in 1970, after finishing the season with an impressive 24-12 record while playing for the Minnesota Twins. Perry was also a three-time All-Star and played a key role in leading several of his teams to the postseason. In addition to his time as a player, Perry also went on to work as a coach and minor league scout after retiring from the sport in 1975. His legacy as one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history is still remembered today.
