John Mayberry

John Mayberry, a former American professional baseball player, was born on February 18, 1949, in Detroit, Michigan. He spent his career primarily as a first baseman and outfielder, playing for four teams in his 15-year major league career. Mayberry started his career with the Houston Colt .45s (later the Astros) in 1968, however, he played only three games that season before being traded to the Kansas City Royals. He played for the Royals from 1969 to 1977, and was a four-time All-Star and a two-time Gold Glove winner during his time with the team. More about John Mayberry

Mayberry’s best season as a player came in 1975 when he hit .291 with 34 home runs and 106 RBIs. He was also highly regarded for his strong arm in the outfield and his defensive prowess at first base. In addition to his time with the Royals, Mayberry played for the Toronto Blue Jays (1978-1982), New York Yankees (1982-1983), and the Royals again in 1984 before retiring. Mayberry retired with a career batting average of .253, 255 home runs, and 879 RBIs.

After retiring from playing, Mayberry became a coach and was a part of the coaching staff for the Seattle Mariners and the Arizona Diamondbacks. He was also inducted into the Royals’ Hall of Fame in 1996 for his contributions to the team during his time there. Mayberry’s legacy as a baseball player has been honored not only with his induction into the Royals’ Hall of Fame but also by the acknowledgement of his contributions to the sport by many baseball fans and experts.
