John McSherry Autographs
John McSherry was born on October 11, 1944 in New York City. He was a baseball umpire who worked in Major League Baseball from 1971 until his untimely death in 1996. McSherry started his career as an umpire in the minor leagues and eventually worked his way up to the majors. He was widely regarded as one of the best and most respected umpires in the game.
During his career, McSherry was involved in several notable events. He was the home plate umpire for Dave Righetti's no-hitter on July 4, 1983, and he also worked the 1988 World Series between the Oakland Athletics and Los Angeles Dodgers. However, McSherry is perhaps best remembered for his role in the opening day game between the Cincinnati Reds and Montreal Expos in 1996. McSherry collapsed on the field in the first inning and was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead from a heart attack. The game was subsequently postponed, and all of Major League Baseball mourned the loss of a beloved umpire.
In honor of John McSherry's legacy, the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum established the John McSherry Award, which is presented annually to a major league umpire who demonstrates the same dedication and professionalism as McSherry. McSherry was also posthumously inducted into the Irish American Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014. His dedication and passion for the game of baseball will never be forgotten.
