Jonathan Papelbon is a former American professional baseball pitcher who played for the Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, Washington Nationals, and the Detroit Tigers. Papelbon was born on November 23, 1980, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. His baseball career began when he played college baseball for Mississippi State University. Papelbon spent the bulk of his career with the Boston Red Sox. He made his MLB debut in 2005 and quickly became one of the team's most reliable relief pitchers. He was a four-time All-Star and helped the Red Sox win the World Series in 2007. In 2009, Papelbon recorded a Red Sox record of 38 saves in one season. In 2011, he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies, where he continued to flourish, recording a 2.44 earned run average (ERA) over his four years with the team. In 2015, he signed with the Washington Nationals, and his playing career came to a close after a short stint with the Detroit Tigers in 2016.

Throughout his career, Papelbon was known for his ability to pitch under pressure, his passionate demeanor on the mound, and his impressive strikeout rates. He was one of the most dominant relief pitchers of his time and finished his career with 368 saves, a 2.44 ERA, and 808 strikeouts in 725 innings pitched. His career highlights include six All-Star selections, one World Series title, and a reputation as one of the most imposing closers in baseball history.
