He began his baseball career playing in the minor leagues for the Kansas City Royals organization in 2006, but he was eventually released in 2015. Martinez's baseball career took a turn in 2019 when he was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays, where he struggled to replicate his success with the Cardinals.
