Wood's most memorable game came on May 6, 1998, when he struck out 20 Houston Astros batters in just his fifth career start. This was a rookie record that still stands to this day. Wood's fastball reached 100 mph, and he had a devastating curveball that he used to keep batters guessing. Unfortunately, injuries plagued his career, and he was never quite able to pitch up to his full potential for a sustained period of time. Despite this, Wood continued to pitch for the Cubs and even helped them reach the playoffs in 2003.

In 2010, Wood returned to the Cubs, this time as a relief pitcher. He helped them reach the National League Championship Series that year and was awarded the Cubs' annual "Good Guy Award" for his work in the community. He also helped the team win the 2016 World Series as a member of their front office. Wood finished his career with a 86-75 record and a 3.67 ERA, with 1,582 strikeouts in 1,380 career innings. Today, Wood is remembered as one of the greatest strikeout pitchers in baseball history, and he continues to be an active member of the baseball community.
