Lennie Merullo was a former professional baseball player who had an 11-year career in the major leagues. Born on May 5, 1917, in Boston, Merullo began playing baseball at an early age and eventually got signed by the Chicago Cubs as a shortstop. Throughout his career, Merullo played mostly for the Cubs but also spent brief stints with the Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Red Sox. He was known for his defensive abilities and became known as one of the best defensive shortstops in the league. In 1945, he was part of the Cubs team that won the National League pennant, although they lost in the World Series to the Detroit Tigers. Merullo retired from baseball in 1947 with a .240 batting average, 8 home runs, and 152 RBIs over 664 games.

After his playing days, Merullo stayed involved in baseball as a scout, coach, and instructor, and remained a beloved figure in the Cubs organization. He passed away on May 30, 2015, at the age of 98. Today, he is remembered not only for his impressive baseball career but also for his infectious smile and positive attitude towards life.
