Lloyd McClendon is a former professional baseball player and coach, born on January 11, 1959, in Gary, Indiana. McClendon started playing baseball at Roosevelt High School and continued his passion for the sport at Valparaiso University. He was drafted twice in his college career, but he refused to sign until the New York Mets drafted him in 1980. He played for the Mets in the minor league for two years before being traded to the Cincinnati Reds in 1982, where he made his major league debut the same year. More about Lloyd McClendon

McClendon played for several teams in his 8-year career, including the Cincinnati Reds, Chicago Cubs, and Pittsburgh Pirates. He played in a total of 570 games and had 50 home runs, 169 RBIs, and a .244 batting average. The highlight of his career was with the Pirates in 1991, where he hit a home run in the National League Championship Series to send his team to the World Series. He retired from playing baseball in 1994 but continued his career in the sport as a coach.

After his retirement, McClendon quickly became a coach, starting as a minor league instructor for the Pirates in 1995. In 2001, he became the Pirates' hitting coach, and six years later, he was named the team's manager. He also managed the Seattle Mariners from 2014 to 2015. During his managerial career, he showed himself to be a great leader, even though his teams struggled on the diamond.
