Gehrig quickly made an impact on the team and became one of their star players, eventually becoming known as the “Iron Horse” for his durability and consistency on the field. He played in a total of 2,130 consecutive games, a record that stood for over half a century. During his 17-year career, Gehrig became one of the most feared hitters in baseball, racking up 2,721 hits, 493 home runs, and 1,995 RBIs. He was part of six World Series championship teams and was named MVP twice.

Sadly, Gehrig's career was cut short when he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which later became known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. In 1939, the Yankees held a now-famous ceremony at Yankee Stadium where Gehrig gave his memorable “luckiest man on the face of the earth” speech, which has become one of the most emotional moments in baseball history. Gehrig passed away on June 2, 1941, at the age of 37. He was posthumously inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939, and his number “4” was retired by the Yankees, making him the first player in baseball history to receive that honor.
