Johnson's professional basketball career began in 1979 when he was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers. He quickly established himself as a dominant player, leading the Lakers to five NBA championships and earning three MVP awards. Johnson's larger-than-life personality and his exceptional skills on the court earned him the nickname "Magic", and he became one of the most popular athletes in the world. Throughout his career, he was known for his exceptional passing abilities and his ability to play multiple positions on the court.

In 1991, Johnson announced that he was HIV-positive and retired from basketball. He returned to the Lakers in 1996 for a brief stint, but eventually retired for good in 1997. Despite his early retirement from the sport, Johnson has remained involved in basketball through coaching, ownership, and philanthropy. He is the founder of the Magic Johnson Foundation, which focuses on improving the health and well-being of underserved communities, and he has been a tireless advocate for HIV/AIDS awareness and research.
