Manuel Gerardo Mota was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on February 18, 1938. He started his baseball career in 1957, playing in the Dominican Professional Baseball League for the Leones del Escogido. In 1962, he signed with the San Francisco Giants but spent most of his career playing for the Dodgers.
