Manny Sanguillen was born on March 21, 1944, in Colon, Panama. He began his baseball career in his home country before being signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1964. Sanguillen quickly became a star player for the Pirates, known for his strong arm behind the plate and his ability to hit for average. Sanguillen was known for being a clutch performer, especially in the postseason. He hit .415 in the 1971 World Series and was a key player in the Pirates’ championship run. In the 1979 World Series, Sanguillen hit .357 and provided crucial hits in the series-clinching Game 7. He played for the Pirates for 13 seasons before being traded to the Oakland A’s in 1977. Sanguillen finished his career with a .296 batting average, 709 runs batted in, and 65 home runs.

After his playing career ended, Sanguillen remained involved in baseball as a coach and scout. He was inducted into the Latino Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999 and was honored by the Pirates by having his number 35 retired.
