Rivera began his professional career in 1990 when he was signed by the Yankees as an amateur free agent. He spent four years in the minor leagues before being called up to the majors in 1995. During his first season, he became the team's setup man before taking over the role of closer in 1997. Rivera was instrumental in the Yankees' success, helping lead the team to five World Series titles from 1996 to 2009. He was named the World Series MVP in 1999 and earned 13 All-Star selections throughout his career.

In 2013, Rivera announced his retirement from baseball at the end of the season. He finished his career with a record 652 saves and a 2.21 ERA. Rivera was also the last player to wear the number 42, which was retired across all of Major League Baseball in honor of Jackie Robinson. In 2019, Rivera became the first player unanimously elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, solidifying his legacy as one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history.
