Mark Fidrych is an American former Major League Baseball pitcher who was born on Aug. 14, 1954, in Worcester, Massachusetts. Nicknamed "The Bird" for his hunched-over pitching style that resembled a bird bobbing up and down on a branch, Fidrych captured the imagination of America with his boyish enthusiasm, unconventional antics on the mound, and dominant rookie season in 1976. Fidrych made his MLB debut with the Detroit Tigers on April 20, 1976, and quickly became a sensation for his eccentric behavior, such as talking to the ball, smoothing out the dirt on the mound with his hands between pitches, and giving the ball to the umpire after a strikeout. He also became a force on the mound, going 19-9 in 29 starts as a rookie, and winning the American League Rookie of the Year award.
