Mathias attended Irvington High School in Fremont, California. Undrafted out of high school, Mathias attended California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, where he played college baseball for the Cal Poly Mustangs. Mathias played for the 2014 USA Collegiate National Team. He underwent arthroscopic shoulder surgery in December 2014.
