Marshall Bridges Autograph

Marshall Bridges was born in Jackson, Mississippi in 1931, and he quickly discovered a passion for baseball. He played in high school and then in college at Jackson State University, where he excelled as a pitcher. In 1952, he was signed by the St. Louis Browns, but he didn't make it past the minor leagues until he was traded to the New York Yankees in 1959. This was his big break, and he quickly became an invaluable arm in the bullpen. More about Marshall Bridges

As a Yankee, Bridges was known for his unorthodox delivery and his ability to throw off batters with his motion. He was also known for his fearlessness, coming into games with the bases loaded and striking out the side, earning him the nickname "Sheriff." Bridges helped the Yankees win the World Series in 1961 and 1962, and he is most remembered for his clutch performance in the seventh game of the 1961 World Series. He entered the game with the Yankees leading 3-2 in the eighth inning, and he held the Cincinnati Reds scoreless for two innings, securing the victory and the championship.

Bridges played for four more teams before retiring in 1964, but he will always be remembered as a Yankee. He finished his career with a record of 29-22, with 33 saves and an ERA of 3.75. After retiring from baseball, Bridges served in the Army and then moved to Jackson, where he worked as a printer for many years. He passed away in 1990, but his legacy lives on, as he remains one of the most beloved Yankee relievers of all time. Read even more about Marshall Bridges at Wikipedia
