Matt Lawton was born in Gulfport, Mississippi on November 3rd, 1971. He attended Harrison Central High School and was known for his athletic prowess. Lawton was drafted in the 13th round of the 1988 MLB draft by the Minnesota Twins, but he chose to attend college instead. Lawton made his MLB debut with the Twins in 1995 and spent five seasons with the team. He was a steady presence in the Twins lineup, batting near the top of the order and providing solid defense in right field. In 2000, he was traded to the New York Mets and then again to the Cleveland Indians the following year. It was with the Indians that Lawton had his best season, hitting .305 with 13 home runs and 80 RBI. He was named to the American League All-Star team that year, and his strong play helped the Indians win the American League Central division.

Lawton would go on to play for six teams over the remainder of his career, including the New York Yankees and the Pittsburgh Pirates. He retired from baseball in 2006 with a career batting average of .267, 1,273 hits, and 138 home runs. Lawton was known for his steady play in the outfield and his ability to get on base, as evidenced by his career on-base percentage of .368.
