Vernon started his playing career in 1939, when he signed with the Washington Senators. He quickly became a standout player and helped the team win the 1945 American League pennant. His greatest season came in 1953, when he led the league in hits, doubles, and triples, and was named American League player of the year. Vernon finished his career with an impressive batting average of .286 and 2,495 hits, placing him among the top ten players in both categories.

Despite his many accomplishments, Vernon was often overlooked by baseball historians and fans. He was never inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, despite being eligible for 20 years. However, his contributions to the game of baseball remain significant, and he is still remembered by many for his hitting, fielding, and overall skill as a player. After retiring from baseball in 1960, Vernon continued to be involved in the sport as a coach and manager, working with several minor league teams until his death in 2008.
