Mike Schmidt, born on September 27, 1949, is a former American baseball player who played his entire career, spanning 18 seasons, for the Philadelphia Phillies. Schmidt is widely regarded as one of the greatest third basemen of all time, having won numerous accolades and breaking several records during his career. Schmidt began his professional baseball career in 1972 with the Phillies, and quickly established himself as a standout player. He won his first National League Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in 1980, leading the Phillies to their first-ever World Series championship. Schmidt won two more MVP awards in 1981 and 1986, becoming only the fourth player in history to win the award three times. Over his career, he hit 548 home runs, ranking him seventh on the all-time list at the time of his retirement, and was known for his exceptional fielding at third base.

In addition to his success on the field, Schmidt was known for his leadership and sportsmanship. He was inducted into the Phillies Wall of Fame in 1989 and had his number 20 retired by the team. After his retirement, Schmidt worked as a broadcaster and served as an advisor for several MLB teams.
