Stanton made his MLB debut with the Braves in 1989 and quickly established himself as a reliable closer. He regularly recorded saves in his first few seasons with the team, including a career-high 27 saves in 1991. After four seasons with the Braves, Stanton moved to the Boston Red Sox in 1995, where he spent only one season. The next year, he signed with the New York Yankees, where he spent the bulk of his career and became a fan favorite. Stanton was a pivotal part of the Yankees' bullpen and helped lead the team to four World Series titles in five years from 1998-2000 and 2009.

In 2010, Stanton was traded to the Washington Nationals, where he played for one season before retiring. Over the course of his 19-year career, Stanton recorded 1173 strikeouts and a 3.92 ERA. He also made three All-Star appearances in 2001, 2002, and 2004. Stanton's contributions to the sport of baseball were essential to his teams' successes, and his impact on the game will not soon be forgotten.
