Napoleon "Nap" Lajoie was a French-Canadian baseball player who was born on September 5, 1874, in Woonsocket, Rhode Island. He played for 21 seasons between 1896 and 1916 and had a remarkable career in the major leagues. Lajoie started his professional baseball journey with the Philadelphia Phillies but found his true calling with the Cleveland Indians. Lajoie is considered one of the greatest second basemen in history and is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame. He was an excellent hitter, with a lifetime .338 batting average, and was also known for his fielding abilities, particularly his accuracy in throwing out runners. In 1904, he won the American League batting crown with a .376 average, and in 1901, he set an MLB record that still stands today by collecting 8 hits in a single game. In 1910, Lajoie led the Cleveland Indians to their first pennant and faced off against Ty Cobb for the inaugural Chalmers Award, which goes to the most valuable player in each major league.
