Omar Minaya Autographs
Omar Minaya is a former general manager of Major League Baseball (MLB). He was born on November 10, 1958, in Peravia, Dominican Republic. Minaya was known as an excellent talent scout and is credited with the development of many players who have gone on to become stars in the league. Minaya's baseball career began with an internship with the Texas Rangers in 1985. He subsequently held positions with the Pittsburgh Pirates, the San Francisco Giants, and the New York Mets.
In 2002, Omar Minaya became the General Manager of the Montreal Expos, now the Washington Nationals. He was the first Hispanic American to hold this position in MLB history. Minaya quickly went to work, developing a farm system that produced future stars such as Cliff Lee, Grady Sizemore, and Brandon Phillips. He also orchestrated a trade for Bartolo Colon, which helped the struggling team find success. After the 2004 season, the Expos relocated to Washington, and Minaya left to join the New York Mets as their Executive Vice President and General Manager.
During Minaya's tenure with the Mets, the team enjoyed some of its most successful seasons in recent history. He was responsible for a number of high-profile acquisitions, including Carlos Beltran, Pedro Martinez, and Carlos Delgado. In 2006, the Mets won 97 games and reached the National League Championship Series. While Omar Minaya's career in baseball has had its ups and downs, he has consistently shown an eye for talent and a dedication to building successful teams.
