That year, he won the National League Cy Young Award, helped lead the Dodgers to a championship, and pitched a record-setting 59 consecutive scoreless innings, earning him the nickname “Bulldog”. Hershiser’s clutch performances in the postseason earned him the World Series MVP Award, as he pitched a shutout in Game 2, and won Game 5 with a complete game performance.

Over his 18-year career, Hershiser played for five different teams and was a three-time All-Star. He finished his career with 204 wins, 2,149 strikeouts, a 3.48 ERA, and 4 Gold Gloves. Hershiser also won a Gold Medal at the 1984 Olympics as part of the United States baseball team. After his playing career, he has worked as a commentator for several networks, including ESPN and Dodgers’ SportsNet LA.
