Randy Velarde is a former Major League Baseball infielder who played for a number of teams during his career. Born in California in 1962, Velarde was a gifted athlete from an early age, excelling in both football and baseball in high school. He was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 1980, but opted to attend college instead. After graduating from the University of California, Berkeley, he was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 19th round of the 1985 MLB draft.
Velarde made his Major League debut with the Athletics in 1987, but it wasn't until the 1990s that he became a regular starter. He played second base, third base, and shortstop for the team, contributing both offensively and defensively. In 1995, he was traded to the New York Yankees, where he continued to be a versatile player. He was known for his ability to play multiple positions, his strong defensive skills, and his clutch hitting. Velarde also played for the Anaheim Angels, Texas Rangers, and Oakland Athletics during his career, retiring in 2002.
Overall, Velarde's baseball career spanned 16 seasons, during which he played in over 1,500 games and compiled a batting average of .276. He was named an All-Star in 1999 and won a Gold Glove Award the same year. Velarde is remembered as a dedicated and hardworking player who was respected by his teammates and opponents alike. After retiring from baseball, he has been involved in coaching and scouting at various levels.
