He started his baseball career when he was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the first round of the 1972 Major League Baseball draft. Manning played as an outfielder throughout his thirteen-year career in the major league, mostly for the Cleveland Indians.
Rick Manning set a high standard early on in his baseball career with the Cleveland Indians. During his rookie season in 1975, he impressed everyone with his exceptional outfield skills, speed, and base stealing ability. His best offensive season came in 1977 when he hit .295 with 41 stolen bases. Manning was known for his defensive plays and made a name for himself with his impeccable skills. He was awarded the Rawlings Gold Glove Award in both 1976 and 1977 for his outstanding abilities in the outfield.
