Rick Monday was born on November 20, 1945, in Arkansas. He attended Arizona State University, where he played baseball and was selected by the Kansas City Athletics in the first round of the 1965 draft. In 1972, Monday was traded to the Chicago Cubs, where he played for the next five seasons. During his time with the Cubs, Monday earned a reputation as an excellent hitter and outfielder. He hit a career-high 32 home runs in 1976 and was named to the National League All-Star team twice.

In 1977, Monday was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he played for the final eight years of his career. In one of the most memorable moments of his career, Monday became an American hero when he famously saved an American flag from being burned on the field during a game against the Cubs on April 25, 1976. Overall, Monday had a successful career, finishing with a .264 batting average, 241 home runs, and 775 RBIs.
