Rick Monday was born on November 20, 1945, in Arkansas. He attended Arizona State University, where he played baseball and was selected by the Kansas City Athletics in the first round of the 1965 draft. In 1972, Monday was traded to the Chicago Cubs, where he played for the next five seasons. During his time with the Cubs, Monday earned a reputation as an excellent hitter and outfielder.
