Rico Petrocelli was born on June 27, 1943, in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in California. He played baseball at University High School in Los Angeles and was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the second round of the 1962 Major League Baseball draft. Petrocelli played 13 seasons with the Red Sox and was a two-time All-Star and a two-time Gold Glove award winner. He was known for his powerful throwing arm and his ability to play multiple positions, including shortstop and third base.
