His greatest strength was his exceptional hitting ability, as he was blessed with incredible hand-eye coordination and a sharp eye for pitches. He won his first batting title in 1969 with a .332 average and went on to win six more titles in his career, including four in a row from 1972 to 1975. In 1977, Carew hit .388, which was the highest batting average in the American League since Ted Williams hit .406 in 1941.

He had a total of 3,053 hits, 1,424 runs batted in, and 353 stolen bases. He was also an exceptional fielder, winning six Gold Glove Awards for his defensive play at second base.
