Roger Maris

Roger Maris, born on September 10, 1934, in Hibbing, Minnesota, was an American professional baseball player. Maris began his baseball career in 1957 with the Cleveland Indians, but it was not until he was traded to the New York Yankees in 1960 that he made his mark in the baseball world. He quickly became an integral part of the team that had some of baseball's biggest stars of that era, including Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, and Whitey Ford. Maris was renowned for his strong arm in the outfield and his impressive hitting ability, and his performance soon earned him a reputation as one of the most talented players in the league. Maris's exceptional abilities were put to the test in 1961 when he started the season with a mission to break Babe Ruth's record of 60 home runs in a single season. Despite facing constant pressure and scrutiny from the media and fans alike, Maris remained focused and dedicated. In fact, it was not until the last game of the season that Maris was finally able to surpass Ruth's record, hitting his 61st homerun off the Boston Red Sox' pitcher Tracy Stallard. The feat made Maris an instant legend in the sport, and he was awarded two American League Most Valuable Player Awards for his efforts.

Throughout his career, Maris continued to play for the New York Yankees until 1966. He was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals, where he played his final season in 1967, before retiring from the sport. Maris finished his career with an impressive .260 batting average, 275 home runs, and 850 RBIs. He became eligible for induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974, but regrettably, he was never elected. Roger Maris's legacy, however, remains intact, and despite the challenges he faced during his career, he is remembered as one of the most exceptional players to step out onto the diamond.
