After college, Blomberg signed a contract with the New York Yankees in 1967 for $75,000, and he went on to make his major league debut with the team on September 10, 1969. He played for the Yankees for seven years, during which he had a solid performance. He became the first designated hitter in Major League Baseball history, which was introduced in 1973. Blomberg had his best season in 1973, with a batting average of .329, 12 home runs, and 57 runs batted in (RBIs), which led to his selection to the Major League All-Star team. His overall performance helped the Yankees win the American League East Division in 1976.

Blomberg's baseball career was not without some challenges. He suffered a serious knee injury, which affected his performance and shortened his career. After leaving the Yankees in 1978, he signed with the Chicago White Sox for one season before ultimately retiring in 1979 at the age of 30. Despite his career being cut short, Ron Blomberg left an indelible mark on the game of baseball and became a trailblazer for designated hitters in the league.
