After college, Blomberg signed a contract with the New York Yankees in 1967 for $75,000, and he went on to make his major league debut with the team on September 10, 1969. He played for the Yankees for seven years, during which he had a solid performance. He became the first designated hitter in Major League Baseball history, which was introduced in 1973. Blomberg had his best season in 1973, with a batting average of .329, 12 home runs, and 57 runs batted in (RBIs), which led to his selection to the Major League All-Star team.
