Ron Darling

Ron Darling was born on August 19, 1960, in Honolulu, Hawaii. He attended Yale University where he played college baseball as an outfielder and pitcher. In 1981, he was selected by the Texas Rangers in the first round of the amateur draft but chose to sign with the New York Mets instead. He made his major league debut in September of 1983 as a starting pitcher and soon became one of the key members of the Mets’ pitching staff. In 1986, he played a crucial role in helping the Mets win the World Series. Darling had a career record of 136-116 with a 3.87 ERA over 13 seasons with the Mets, Montreal Expos, and Oakland Athletics. More about Ron Darling

Darling’s best year was in 1985 when he finished 4th in the National League Cy Young voting after posting a record of 16-6 with a 2.90 ERA. He was known for his ability to mix his pitches effectively and for his outstanding control. In 1989, he was selected to the All-Star team and finished 10th in the Cy Young voting with a record of 14-14 and a 3.52 ERA. Despite the ups and downs of his career, he was a consistent presence on the mound and respected by his peers.

After retiring as a player, Darling became a broadcaster for the Mets and was a part of their television coverage from 2006 to 2018. He has since transitioned into a role as an analyst for ESPN’s baseball coverage. Darling also published an autobiography in 2019 titled “108 Stitches: Loose Threads, Ripping Yarns, and the Darndest Characters from My Time in the Game”.
