Ron Santo was an American baseball player who was born on February 25, 1940, in Seattle, Washington. He was a highly successful player and was best known for his tenure with the Chicago Cubs. He began his baseball career in 1960 with the Cubs and remained with the franchise until 1973. During that time, he was an integral part of the team, earning nine All-Star Game selections, five Gold Glove awards, and placing in the top ten of the National League MVP voting four times. Despite his success on the field, Santo faced adversity off the field. He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 18 and was forced to manage the disease throughout his life. He wore an insulin pump during games, a practice that was unheard of at the time, and helped to raise awareness about diabetes.
