Russ Meyer Autographs
Russ Meyer was a professional baseball player who had a successful career both as a pitcher and a manager. Born on October 25, 1923, in Peru, Illinois, Meyer began his baseball journey while studying at the University of Illinois. He played college baseball for the Illinois Fighting Illini where he became one of the best pitchers in the history of the school. During his senior year, he led his team to the Big Ten Conference championship and earned All-American honors.
In 1943, Meyer joined the Navy and played for the Great Lakes Naval Training Station team during World War II. After his discharge, he was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies in 1946 where he played for five seasons. In 1953, he was traded to the Brooklyn Dodgers where he played for two seasons before being traded to the Chicago Cubs in 1955. Meyer became the first pitcher in the Cubs' history to throw a no-hitter in 1956. He retired from baseball after the 1959 season and became a scout for the Cubs and later, the Los Angeles Dodgers.
After his baseball career, Meyer turned to managing and coached in the minors for several years. In 1976, he was hired as the manager of the Oakland Athletics, succeeding Hall of Famer Dick Williams. He led the team to a 7-1 start, but the season took a disastrous turn and he was fired in June with a 26-35 record. Nonetheless, his baseball career was impressive, and he was inducted into the University of Illinois Sports Hall of Fame in 1972. Meyer passed away on November 27, 1997, leaving behind a legacy in both baseball and film-making.
