Sidney Lowe was born on January 21, 1960, in Washington, D.C. where he was raised by his parents. Lowe played high school basketball at DeMatha Catholic High School before committing to play for North Carolina State University. At N.C. After his playing days ended, Lowe became a head coach for both the NBA and the college ranks. He started coaching in 1990 when he became an assistant coach for the Charlotte Hornets. In 1995, he was named the head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves but lasted only two seasons in the position. Lowe then moved on to college coaching, where he became the head coach for North Carolina State University. Despite a few good seasons, he was ultimately let go after failing to reach the NCAA tournament in five of his six years at the helm.
Lowe continued his coaching career in the NBA as an assistant coach for teams such as the Jazz, Grizzlies, Pistons, Timberwolves, and Wizards. He also had a stint as the head coach for the Chinese Basketball Association's Shanxi Zhongyu Brave Dragons in 2011. Most recently, in 2020, Lowe was named an assistant coach for the Detroit Pistons.
