Steve Carlton is considered one of the greatest left-handed pitchers in the history of baseball. He was born on December 22, 1944, in Miami, Florida. He began his baseball career as a pitcher for the Miami Dade Junior College team. Carlton was the first-round pick of the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1963 Major League Baseball Draft. His professional career began in 1965 when he made his debut for the St. Louis Cardinals. In his first year in the majors, Carlton proved that he was a force to be reckoned with, posting a 11-5 record with an impressive 2.93 ERA. More about Steve Carlton

In 1969, Carlton was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies, where he spent the majority of his career. He continued to dominate on the mound and was an essential part of the Phillies' success throughout the 1970s. In 1972, he became the first pitcher to win the Cy Young Award in the National League while playing for a team with a losing record. Carlton also helped lead the Phillies to their first-ever World Series appearance in 1980.
