Garvey started his professional career with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1969, and he spent his first nine seasons with the team. During this time, he earned eight All-Star selections and won four consecutive National League Gold Glove Awards. Garvey was also a key contributor to the Dodgers' World Series championship team in 1981, where he was named the Most Valuable Player of the series. In 1983, Garvey signed with the San Diego Padres, where he played for five more years and cemented his place as one of the greatest players in franchise history.

Throughout his career, Garvey was known for his consistency, both at the plate and in the field. He finished his career with a lifetime batting average of .294, and he was considered one of the most reliable and skilled first basemen in the game. Garvey's impressive numbers and achievements earned him numerous accolades, including induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2012.
