Sax won two World Series championships with the Dodgers, the first of which was in 1981, his rookie season. He was considered one of the best second basemen in the National League in the mid-1980s, and his great defensive skills earned him the Gold Glove Award in 1986 and 1987. Sax was also named an All-Star five times during his career.

After leaving the Dodgers, Sax played for the New York Yankees for three seasons, from 1989 to 1991, before going on to play for the Chicago White Sox and Oakland A’s. Sax retired from major league baseball in 1994 with a career batting average of .281, 444 RBIs (runs batted in), 1,940 hits, and 444 stolen bases.
