Pendleton was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 7th round of the 1982 MLB draft. He made his major league debut in 1984 and became a starter in 1986. Pendleton was known for his excellent fielding abilities at third base and his well-rounded offensive skills. In 1987, he hit .286 with 12 home runs and 96 RBIs, which helped him earn a Gold Glove Award and a second-place finish in the National League MVP voting.
