In 1986, Layana was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 15th round of the MLB draft. He made his debut in 1989, starting as a pitcher for the Reds' second game that season. He spent two seasons with the Reds before being traded to the Kansas City Royals in 1991. Layana's best season came in 1993 when he posted a 7-1 record with the Royals and achieved an impressive 2.06 ERA.

After his stint with the Royals, Layana spent time with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Los Angeles Dodgers before retiring from baseball in 1998. He finished his career with a 29-14 record and an overall ERA of 3.37. Despite retiring more than two decades ago, Tim Layana is still remembered for his solid pitching and contributions to baseball.
