McCarver played in the Major Leagues for 21 seasons, playing for the Cardinals, Philadelphia Phillies, Montreal Expos, Boston Red Sox, and Texas Rangers. He was a two-time All-Star and was a member of two World Series championship teams, in 1964 and 1967, both with the Cardinals. He was known for his strong defensive skills as a catcher, but also hit .271 for his career with 141 home runs and 645 runs batted in. He retired as a player in 1980 and began his broadcasting career, calling games for several different networks.

McCarver has been a prominent baseball analyst and broadcaster for more than three decades, working for CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox, and now the MLB Network. He has called dozens of World Series and All-Star games, as well as regular season games, and has been awarded four Sports Emmy Awards for his broadcasting work. In addition to his broadcasting career, McCarver has written several books and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame's broadcasters section in 2012. His contributions to the sport of baseball, both as a player and broadcaster, have solidified his place as one of the most respected and revered figures in the game's history.
