Martinez's career reached new heights when he joined the New York Yankees in 1996. He helped the team win four World Series championships in five years, and his clutch hitting and superb fielding made him a fan favorite. Martinez was also an All-Star for two consecutive years, in 1997 and 1998, and he hit 44 home runs and drove in 141 runs during the 1997 season, which were both career-highs. After leaving the Yankees in 2001, Martinez played for several other teams, including the St. Louis Cardinals, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, and the New York Mets, before retiring in 2005.

Martinez's legacy as a baseball player is that of a consummate professional who played the game with intensity and grace. He finished his career with a .271 batting average, 339 home runs, and 1,271 runs batted in, and he was also known for his defensive skills, winning five Gold Glove awards.
