Tom Underwood Autographs
Tom Underwood is a former professional baseball player born on December 22nd, 1953 in Kokomo, Indiana. Underwood was a left-handed pitcher who spent 11 seasons pitching for six different major league teams from 1974 to 1984. He was drafted in the 2nd round of the 1972 Major League Baseball Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies straight out of Kokomo High School. After two seasons in the minor leagues, Underwood made his major league debut on April 30th, 1974, pitching for the Phillies. Throughout his career, Underwood pitched for the Phillies, Toronto Blue Jays, St. Louis Cardinals, Oakland Athletics, Baltimore Orioles, and New York Yankees, finishing with a career record of 86-87.
During his time as a professional pitcher, Underwood had a mix of highs and lows. His best season came in 1977 when he went 13-9 with a 3.59 ERA for the Blue Jays. He also had a string of four consecutive seasons with at least 10 wins from 1977 to 1980. One of his more memorable moments came in 1983 when he pitched a complete game shutout against his former team, the Blue Jays, while playing for the Orioles. Despite some success, Underwood also struggled with injuries throughout his career, particularly with his shoulder. After missing the entire 1981 season with a shoulder injury, he was never quite the same pitcher again. Despite his setbacks, Underwood is remembered as a fierce competitor who always gave his best effort on the mound.
After retiring from baseball, Underwood went on to become a successful business owner, owning several car dealerships in Kokomo and the surrounding areas. He remained a colorful character in the Kokomo community, where he was known for his love of baseball, cigars, and classic cars. Sadly, Underwood passed away on July 1, 2010, at the age of 56 following a lengthy battle with esophageal cancer. Despite his untimely passing, his legacy as a talented and determined pitcher will be remembered by baseball fans for generations to come.
